Practice Areas › Birth injury and cerebral palsy
What is cerebral palsy? Cerebral palsy is a neurologic disorder that affects movement control and muscle coordination. The disorder is permanent, but with the appropriate therapies, does not worsen over time. Most children with CP are afflicted from birth, though the symptoms may not be apparent right away. Early signs usually appear within the first three years of life.
Causes of CP Cerebral palsy has many possible causes, including medical negligence. If you experienced complications during pregnancy or delivery, or if your child had complications after delivery, we invite you to call and speak with an attorney or nurse at our firm. We can help you investigate whether your child's CP could have been prevented, and whether your child might be entitled to compensation.
Our experience Birth injury claims are among the most serious, and often the most complicated, that arise in the civil justice system. Liz Kuniholm has over 25 years' experience advocating for children with birth injuries, including cerebral palsy. Our attorneys and medical staff are knowledgeable about the medical complexities of these cases, and sensitive to the practical and emotional difficulties they present for families.
Case review Our review of a birth injury case begins with collecting as much information as possible from the parents and from the medical records of both mother and child, including fetal monitor tracings. Our medical staff reviews this information with our attorneys. If a formal review is called for, we consult with specialists -- obstetricians, anesthesiologists, neonatologists, radiologists -- who can help us determine whether negligence by a doctor or hospital employee caused the birth injury.
Preparing for the future Once we have accepted your child's case, we can arrange for a rehabilitation specialist to plan for your child's lifetime needs and locate the resources to meet those needs. An economist will help us estimate the costs of caring for your child. We can also put you in touch with a case manager to help you coordinate the services and supplies your child will need after the case is concluded.
Our history of success All children who suffer from this tragic illness deserve a thorough analysis of whether others may be responsible. Children who have been injured by medical negligence need conscientious, skilled representation -- the kind of service Kuniholm Law Firm offers. Our experience, expertise, and thoroughness in gathering and analyzing information about your child's injury, combined with our history of success in court, make us vigorous and effective advocates for your child and your family, whether in negotiations with the medical malpractice insurance company or before the jury.
